The Challenge

In its drive to bring better healthcare and fertility treatments to all, Nova Medicals found that having invested heavily in an on-site IT infrastructure its own IT staff lacked the resources to manage and maintain its servers.

“Our investments were bleeding our capital expenditure budget” comments Nova Medicals CIO Hanritha Chakravarthy, “Curbing operating costs was becoming essential”. He realised Nova needed a hosted data centre for its applications as well as Global Virtual Private Network Connectivity for its clinics and fertility centres.

The Solution

As Nova continued to add new clinics, it needed to meet the needs of its patients, its surgical and nursing staff as well as third party stakeholders, such as insurance companies and diagnostic laboratories. It needed a single platform offering scalability, reliability and security.

Apart from data centre services, it also delivers a common information platform and refines security, by providing Nova-specific security practices, coupled with lower operating costs”

TATA Communications Managed Hosting Services set up load balancers to manage peak period transaction demand on Nova’s servers as well as deploying networking and security equipment such as LAN switches and firewalls. Then to safeguard Nova’s extensive capital investment  moved the servers to TATA’s own data centre in Chennai.

Having sized Nova’s business applications, TATA recommended virtualizing the hosted servers to maximise their capabilities. Next, TATA Communications virtualized Nova’s multiple critical clinical applications on the private cloud.These could then be delivered securely to users not just in Nova’s clinics, but to doctors located off-site, insurers accessing patient records and diagnostic labs uploading reports or images.

TATA Communications recommended Managed Connectivity at all locations with fibre connectivity for the last mile. It also deployed Managed Services to actively monitor all servers, operating systems, firewall, access LAN switches, dedicated SAN storage and backup. TATA Communications specialized service offers scalable storage on the SAN when Nova requires extra data flow for example for short term storage of images. The Backup Service ensures these files are restored within 30 minutes and is frequently tested for internal audits.

Finally, TATA Communications Managed Security Services integrates firewall, intrusion detection and prevention, anti virus, anti spam and web content filtering to improve network security which are supplemented by monthly security drills based on terms set by Nova.

The Result

Nova can deliver better healthcare to more people through a high computing capacity that can support the company’s rapid growth. The network can self-adjust sudden surges in demand at any location, scaling seamlessly without interruption. Nova is now managing 600 000 transactions a month with monthly growth of 10-15%. 

The open, flexible platform can now add new applications and features while TATA can rectify breakdowns via text or email alerts without disrupting the vital work of the clinics. 

Hanritha adds, “The investments are high, but this makes our services agile… This brings us quicker return on investment, allowing us to grow quickly.” 

By virtualizing its servers, TATA also freed up valuable real estate, lowering capital investment and paving the way for the addition of new clinics bringing benefits for Nova medicals, its partners and most importantly, its patients.
